2005 Coastal Toxicology Course and Retreat

Responding in 1985 to an initiative from the State of California Legislature, the University of California developed a coordinated program of research and teaching to address the many issues associated with toxic substances in the environment. The UC Toxic Substances Research and Teaching Program (UC TSR&TP) supports research and graduate education in toxics-related fields to help provide the new concepts and scientific talent that are essential to solving the growing problems of toxic chemicals in our environment. Through its lead campus programs, the TSR&TP strives to develop Centers of Excellence for research on the impacts of toxic substances on human and environmental health, and on new methods for preventing or mitigating such impacts.

LOCATION: Students and Trainees will stay at the Bodega Marine Lab dormitories. Faculty and Staff will stay at the Inn at the Tides Hotel in Bodega.
DATES: The retreat will fall on the weekend immediately following the Course, September 16th - 18th, 2005 (Friday evening through Sunday morning).
All faculty/students/and trainees who have been involved in the Toxics program for the past year will receive an invitation at the beginning of the summer. The students will present information from the course followed by several speakers. To view an example agenda please click on the link.

COASTAL TOXICOLOGY COURSE
LOCATION: The course will be located at the Bodega Marine Laboratories, Bodega Bay, California, from September 11th -16th, 2005 (Sunday evening though Friday evening - to be followed by the retreat).
TEXTBOOKS: Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, Donald G. Crosby; Fundamentals of Aquatic Toxicology, Gary M. Rand; Detecting Ecological Impacts, Russell J. Schmitt, and Craig W. Osenberg. These books will be provided for you upon your arrival at UC Davis.
WHAT TO BRING: Students must provide their own linens and towels.
Bodega Head is often foggy especially in summer. Beautiful sunny days tend to be windy. The water, even in summer, is about 54ºF, too cold for more than brief swimming without wet suits. Students should bring clothing suitable for a wide range of weather conditions. Make sure to bring warm clothes, foul weather gear, rubber boots, and/or wet suits for the field sampling. The sampling will be from a small boat and kayaks, and it will occur very early in the morning, so we want to make sure everyone is comfortable.
