| | Research Interests |
My current research interests are focused in two majory areas: (1) the characterization of novel bioactive polypeptides with cytotoxic and antimicrobial properties from marine invertebrates and (2) using marine invertebrates (specifically their hemocytes or blood cells) as indicators of heavy metal pollutants in coastal marine environments and elucidation of the structures of novel metal chelators. In my laboratory, I have equipment for polypeptide isolation and expertise in the characterization of difficult peptide sequences, in particular those that are extensively post-translationally modified.
